FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Averett was picked sixth in the USA South Conference men's cross country preseason poll, which was unveiled on Wednesday. Christopher Newport University, the 17-time defending conference champion, was selected as the favorite.
Christopher Newport, which has won 24 of the 25 USA South championships held since 1980, received six of seven first-place votes (coaches can't vote for their own team). Shenandoah University, which was picked second, received the other first-place vote. Methodist University, Greensboro College and Ferrum College rounded out the top five, followed by Averett and N.C. Wesleyan College.
Averett returns all-conference performer Bryan Swann from last year's team. The Cougars open the season on Sept. 4 at the Guilford College Cross Country Carnival in Greensboro, N.C.
