'Canoween' jumpstarts Cans Across the Conference food drive

DANVILLE, Va. — More than 50 Averett University student-athletes combed the neighborhoods around main campus on Halloween, but they weren't in search of candy. The Averett student-athletes collected nearly 500 canned items in only an hour as they went door-to-door asking residents to donate items as part of "Canoween" on Monday night.

The event, sponsored by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, jumpstarted Averett's efforts in the USA South Conference's annual Cans Across the Conference food drive. Each USA South Conference campus SAAC collects cans and other non-perishable items at their school to benefit a local charity. In 2010, USA South institutions collected a conference-record 64,477 items.

The Cans Across the Conference drive will continue over the next few weeks. Those who wish to donate canned items that will count toward Averett's total can drop off canned goods at the Department of Athletics main office on Averett's North Campus.
