DANVILLE, Va. — Keeping in the spirit of Averett University's new slogan, "One team, one family, one Averett," the Averett University softball team has designated Friday's doubleheader against USA South conference foe Covenant College as its "Strike Out Cancer" game.
Averett softball coach
Bren Taylor sees the game as a way to support past and present team members whose families have been directly affected by cancer.
"It's a big deal," Taylor said. "Over the years we've had several parents affected by cancer. This year we have a player whose mother has overcome ovarian cancer so we use this as a day to celebrate those who have overcome cancer and honor those who are still battling. We've also had a former player's mother die of cancer, so we do it to celebrate her memory as well."
Carrie Hendrick, Director of Averett's Athletic Training Education Program and former head athletic trainer, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Hendrick is currently battling cancer.
The team has raised money by selling T-shirts and plans to have a table set up behind their dugout during Friday's game where fans can donate money. For those who can't attend, donations will be accepted via mail (Averett University, ATTN:
Bren Taylor, 420 West Main St., Danville, VA 24541). All donations will go toward Averett's "Caring for Carrie" campaign and the Jimmy V Foundation.
According to Taylor, the team has received support from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as well. The NFCA has sent Taylor and her team bag of accessories featuring a pink softball and eye black to help the team in its fight against cancer.
The event is also part of Averett's celebration of the NCAA's Division III Week.
Averett takes on Covenant Friday in a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. at Cougar Field.
