Tennis teams volunteer to make meals for 'Rise Against Hunger'

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University's men's and women's tennis teams volunteered to pack meals for "Rise Against Hunger" last Sunday at Epiphany Episcopal Church.

Student-athletes from both programs joined others in the community to help the church pack 10,000 meals to be sent to those in need. This particular batch will be sent to Haiti. Each package included highly nutritious dehydrated meals comprised of rice, soy, vegetables and 23 essential vitamins and minerals.

"It means a lot to us and to Averett as a whole to give back to the community — not just the Danville community but the worldwide community," senior Carlos Lora said.
The student-athletes worked in groups, along with other volunteers, to make the packages at different stations.

"I like to do volunteer work, so it was nice to be there," junior Heid Sarkkinen said. "All our teammates were working hard and it was fun."
