DANVILLE, Va. — Following the success of the Dan River Region's Day to Engage last year, this year's event has been extended to a whole week. A number of Averett University student-athletes, coaches and staff are among those volunteering to participate in this year's Week to Engage, which runs April 13-17.

Monday, April 13, 2015- Play to Engage: Averett's student-athletes and coaches were among the many helping run a field day with various activities at the Carrington Pavilion in downtown Danville from 2-6 p.m. There were a number of activity stations that allowed youth in after-school program to do everything from dribble basketballs or soccer balls, to throwing footballs, playing tug of war, dancing and hula-hooping. Student-athletes served as buddies and interacted with the kids to help promote an active lifestyle while having fun.
- Trail clean-up at the Angler Ridge Mountain Biking Trails: Student-athletes helped pick up trash and clear overgrown branches and brush along the biking trails.
Tuesday, April 14, 2015- Sports and Crafts at the Boys & Girls Club: Averett's student-athletes and coaches volunteered with the Boys & Girls Club of Danville from 3-6 p.m. Student-athletes participated in a variety of activities with the youth to promote academic success, including tutoring and playing educational games that provided a fun way to learn. The youth and student-athletes also had fun doing arts and crafts as well as playing basketball, table tennis, foosball and pool.Â
- Helping through United Way: Members of the football team helped do yard work for a seniors house through United Way.
- God's Store House: Volunteers helped God's Store House organize its canned good items.
Thursday, April 16, 2015- Art for Autism in the River District:Â Members of Averett's volleyball team painted businesses' windows with artwork and facts related to autism to raise autism awareness for passerby's in the River District. Members of the volleyball team also passed out flyers and registration forms to local businesses for the Autism 5k scheduled for April 25.
- Yard work with Third Chance Ministries:Â Averett's football players volunteered with Third Chance Ministries, clearing brush and plating flowers at the Urban Farm on Moffett Street.Â
