SAAC raises nearly $700 for cancer research with 'pie in the face' contest

Averett University's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) raised nearly $700 for cancer research through its "Pie in the face" competition, which culminated Tuesday with women's soccer head coach Sarah Chapman getting smashed in the face with a plate of whipped cream. The contest was one of Averett SAACs' events for the USA South Conference's "Pennies for a Purpose" initiative this spring.

Over the past few weeks, SAAC set up a table with nine jars during home athletics events and at lunch. Each jar featured the photo of a selected Averett coach or athletics administrator. Anyone who wished to donate could put money in the jar of his or her choice. The person whose jar had the most money in it Tuesday at 12:15 was declared the "winner" and earned a pie in the face. With $400.88, Chapman "won" in her first year in the competition.

Overall, Averett SAAC raised $686.32, which will go to the Jimmy V Foundation.

"It means a lot to SAAC because it shows how much support we have from our amazing student body, faculty and staff, who are always willing to help us with our fundraising events," said senior Hobie Proctor, who serves as SAAC's public relations coordinator.

The contest ended this week as part of Division III Week, which is being celebrated nationally. On Monday, SAAC had students sign the "It's On Us" banner pledge.
