Quick Recap: Averett University's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) helped raise more than $1,500 during the Jan. 30 basketball doubleheader as part of the second annual "Caring For Carrie" event to benefit The V Foundation and cancer research. Jamie Valvano, the daughter of legendary N.C. State University men's basketball coach Jim Valvano, was the guest speaker for the event. Valvano recalled her father's vision and mission to help find a cure for cancer. While a cure hasn't been found yet, advances in treatment and technology helped Jamie Valvano with her own battle with cancer 13 years after her father's. And her father's mission has helped countless others.

SAAC raises nearly $700 for cancer research with 'pie in the face' contest

Quick Recap: Averett University's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) raised nearly $700 for cancer research through its "Pie in the face" competition, which culminated Tuesday with women's soccer head coach Sarah Chapman getting smashed in the face with a plate of whipped cream. The contest was one of Averett SAACs' events for the USA South Conference's "Pennies for a Purpose" initiative this spring.

Quick Recap: Averett student-athletes regularly share their experiences as college students and sign autographs for local school children during 'Danville Reads' programs locally at the Danville Mall throughout the academic year.

Averett student-athletes work closely with Special Olympics of Virginia
Quick Recap: Throughout the school year, Averett student-athletes volunteer during a number of events with the area Special Olympics. Teams regularly bowl with local Special Olympians and teams host clinics and play dates. In addition, Averett's Grant Center was one of the hosts of an annual Special Olympics basketball regional and student-athletes helped referee, work the scoring tables and assist with the tournament.

Averett student-athletes wear pink to raise cancer awareness and money for cancer research
Quick Recap: Especially in October, a number of Averett programs host special games where the players where pink jerseys and accessories to promote cancer awareness and raise money for cancer research.

SAAC promotes 'It's On Us' to end sexual assault

Quick Recap: Averett University's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is promoting the "It's on us" campaign by asking fellow students to sign a pledge banner as part of the NCAA's Division III Week. The goal of the banner is to spread awareness and help end sexual assault. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Averett Athletics receives national award for community service efforts

Quick Recap: Averett was only one of several Division III institutions in the country to earn recognition from the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA), which recently announced the recipients of this year's NADIIIAA/JOSTENS Community Service Awards. Each selected institution or conference was recognized for its impressive community service projects performed by its student-athletes during the 2014-15 academic year. Averett was one of three universities to receive "Award of Merit" distinction in the "Array of Projects" category. Each year, Averett participates in "Week to Engage" during the fall and spring semesters by helping with various service projects or activities in the Danville community.
