Averett University Athletics is committed to giving back to both the campus and surrounding Danville community. By providing opportunities for student-athletes to serve, these young men and women make meaningful contributions to society. Teams as well as individual student-athletes are involved in numerous charity and community organizations and events. Some student-athletes have also created, initiated and implemented service projects and activities in the community.

Big Brothers Big Sisters
Averett's student-athletes work as mentors through programs with Big Brothers Big Sisters. The men's and women's basketball teams were recently recognized by the organization for their efforts. Every Thursday, the men's and women's basketball players visit the school where their "little brother" or "little sister" go and eat lunch with them.
Cans Across the Conference
Averett University teams up with the rest of the schools in the USA South Conference for a food drive during the fall. Averett collected canned goods and non-perishable items and delivered them to God's Storehouse in Danville just before Thanksgiving.

Reading in Schools
Student-athletes also contribute their time to area schools. In October, men's basketball players Damien Brown and Jonathan Rumley visited students at Park Avenue Elementary School. The Park Avenue students had been reading a book about a girl who was determined to play basketball, and Brown and Rumley showed them several basketball fundamentals.
"We also gave them some inspiration. If they want to play basketball in the future, they have to keep working hard and dream big," Rumley said.
Outreach to youth and high school athletics teams
In addition to holding clinics, Averett student-athletes have taken part in community outreach programs with area youth and high school athletics teams. In the Fall 2009, Averett's volleyball team got together with Westover Christian Academy's junior varsity volleyball team for a social gathering.
Other programs, activities and events
Averett's student-athletes work with a variety of organizations in the community.
